Co-Working Space – What To Look For

Trends come and go, but one trend that is staying around and is set to get even bigger is that of ‘co-working spaces’. These communal spaces are perfect for freelancers, remote workers or start-ups who aren’t ready to sign a lease yet.

Co-working spaces are popping all over the world, namely because we are turning away from the traditional office space to a more relaxed, flexible working environment, which these co-working spaces provide. It also works cheaper for small companies and freelancers to rent a desk by the hour or day.

What should I look for?

If you’re looking for a space to work in – maybe you find working at home lonely or maybe you have a conference call or meeting  – you want to make sure you find somewhere you can be at your best and the most productive you can be. Here’s a few things to look for:

If you’re spending a day or an important few hours renting an office, you need to know that it has the facilities you will require.

  • Are there printing facilities? And if there are, is printing included in the price?
  • Is there a phone line or phone booths where you can take private calls?
  • Are there accessible toilets?
  • How many powerpoints are available for you to use or will you need to take extra battery packs?
  • Are there private meeting rooms? If so, do you have to book these in advance?

There’s nothing more annoying than trying to do your work and having to wait for everything to load and buffer. So if your work relies a lot on the internet, make sure the office you’re going to will be fast enough for you to work affectively.

Some co-working spaces are decorated beautifully with a range of colours, plants, modern furnishings and art, while others are basic and more formal. Some even have tabletop games like Ping-Pong, hammocks, TVs, communal sitting rooms, libraries ect. If you’re the type of person who doesn’t want to be distracted and would prefer a more formal environment – or perhaps you have an important meeting – maybe a more formal working space would suit your needs more.

Lighting is also very important! Look for a place with natural light, research suggests it provides a more productive and comfortable working environment.

Most co-working spaces provide, at the least, a coffee machine, but it’s always worth checking that there are food and drinking facilities available.
