Hurstwood’s sister company Crystal Property and Land has been granted planning permission to convert their building in Bolton town centre to a 39 bed student accommodation.
The plans provide for six student flats with a total of 37 bedrooms, each with on-suite bathroom facilities and shared kitchen and living space, plus an additional two self-contained bed-sit apartments.
The building, located on Mawdsley Street, was built in 1868 and was originally occupied by the Mechanics’ Institute and College. It is currently divided into a number of rooms spread over three floors plus basement space and was most recently used as a fitness club.
Crystal has already spent over £100,000 in refurbishment budget to improve and maintain the building.
Hurstwood Chairman Stephen Ashworth said: “Our Mawdsley Street property lends itself to student accommodation. It is already divided into a number of small rooms over three floors and features a great deal of character. The building is only a 10 minute walk from the university and is ideally located within the town centre, close to the shops and amenities. The proposed £48m transport interchange is also just a stone’s throw away. We predict that, when occupied, the property will bring a great deal of new business to the shops and leisure facilities of Bolton town centre.”
