The Government’s decision not to extend empty property business rate relief beyond 1st April is a significant blow to the industry which has, and is continuing to be, hit harder than most other sectors of the economy. The whole purpose of rates is for companies to pay for local services. We now have the ridiculous situation where landlords will be paying full empty rates on vacant buildings, whilst occupying businesses who benefit from Council services are able to obtain 100% relief.
