Wellness in the office – 3 reasons why its important.

As the growing stress of modern working life begins to affect our health drastically, we look at the increasing importance of wellness in the work place and why every office should have a focus on improving its staff happiness.

According to research from the human resource firm Investors in People, one in four employees feel unhappy at work, compared to one in three who said they did at the same point last year, with a staggering 47% of the UK workforce expecting to be looking for a new job this year. Why? unemployment has reached its lowest level since 1975, it's far easier to find a job than it has been in the past 10 years so why do workers feel the need to look for jobs? PAY,  pay is a massive drive of unhappiness in the workplace, with 39% of people surveyed feel undervalued and data from the TUC tells us that pay across the UK is expected to fall by 0.7% in 2018 after inflation is taken into account, so not feeling valued in the workplace and an increasing strain on  employees pay has damaged the culture of working life to the point it has impacted productivity.

Why investing in staff happiness/ Wellness is not a waste of money.

The age-old question of how much does it cost? well if you have a correct strategy investing in an employee’s wellbeing can actually help your bottom line. A comment from  REBA (Reward & Employee Benefits association) says ‘’A happy and healthy workforce will be more productive and engaged’’, some other insights tell us that ‘’Happy employees stay with their companies four times longer than their unhappy counterparts, Happy team members have 65% more energy than unhappy employees and finally productivity, one of the key issues of investing in your employees happiness, a study from the University of Warwick tells us that if a leader invests in promoting happiness in the office, productivity levels can rise up to 12%. So there can be no reason for not having any type of employee wellness strategy because if not you’re losing out on productivity in the office.

Good examples of wellness in the workplace.

Facts and numbers are all well and good but it’s the examples of good wellbeing strategies that really show the importance of implementing it. The first examples come from Global social media agency ‘Social Chain’ who have replaced the aged old HR department with a new Director of Happiness Kiera Lawlor, who says ‘ Wellbeing and mindfulness is an important part of our culture. The happiness doesn’t start and end in the office, we aim to give the team skills they can take home with them’. Their office includes a ball pit, slide, Ping pong tables, office dog, office bar. With Social chain being a worldwide success in social media marketing, you can tell their wellness strategy is working.

The second and final example comes from the US with global streaming service Netflix, whose wellness program focuses on taking away the stresses of working life by offering unlimited time-off for holiday and sick days and offers new parents one-year maternity leave.

These examples show that even if you’re an agency or a billion dollar company there is no reason for not having a wellness and happiness strategy for your employees, the smallest of investments can mean large benefits for the business and the employer
